In September, it was reported that a couple in the UK found a big stash of ancient gold coins worth £2,50,000 (Rs 2.3 crores) underneath the kitchen floor of the home they’d lived in for 10 years.

The hoard of 264 gold pieces, which date back more than 400 years, was found during renovation work at the North Yorkshire home in July 2019.

Now, the coins have been auctioned and they have fetched almost three times their estimated value.

The anonymous couple made the monumental discovery underneath a set of floorboards in their kitchen. They initially mistook the stash for an electric cable but soon realised it was a stash of gold about the size of a can of coke.

The coins were stored inside the metal can buried under six inches of concrete. Believe it or not, the pair had no clue about the coins despite living on the property for over 10 years. Their value was estimated by London auctioneers Spink & Son, whose members visited the property at the request of the couple.

Further analysis by the team revealed the coins originally belonged to the Fernley-Maisters, a wealthy merchant family from Hull. The Maisters were importers and exporters of iron ore, timber and coal in the early 1700s.

The gold coins came to be dubbed ‘The Ellerby Area Hoard’ because they were found in the town of Ellebry.

Gregory Edmund, from London auctioneers Spink & Son, said buyers flocked from around the world to bid for the 292-year-old treasure.

The coins were eventually sold for £7,54,320. Edmund said the most valuable item in the can was an imperfectly minted coin from 1720, which itself bought in a bid of £62,400.

“I have never seen a response to an auction like that before, and the results testify it, my provisional estimate was demolished three times over,” said Edmund.

The total collection was sold off in bits and pieces to different collectors, according to a Metro report.
