A majestic male elephant who made the Amboseli ecosystem his home, especially cherishing the Kimana Sanctuary, has engraved his memory in our hearts.

Our hearts are heavy as we reminisce about the life of a remarkable elephant who captured our collective imagination.

Tim, a majestic bull elephant who made the Amboseli ecosystem his home, especially cherishing the Kimana Sanctuary, has etched his memory in our hearts.

Known affectionately as “Tim,” he was a household name cherished by Kenyans and tourists.

Tragically, on February 4, 2020, he left this world. Despite the valiant efforts of his wild companions to revive him, Tim’s lifeless body was discovered near the Kimana gate the following morning.

Dr. Poghon was summoned to investigate the cause of his demise, but no external injuries were evident except for the hyena marks. Thus, it is presumed that he passed away from natural causes.

Tim’s remains will be transported to Nairobi for preservation, ensuring he is forever celebrated at the Nairobi National Museum of Kenya.

Tim’s life symbolized his species, evoking admiration and fascination through photographs, videos, and stories.

He played a pivotal role in reshaping societal attitudes towards elephants, reminding us of our coexistence with these magnificent giants, who contribute immensely to the Earth’s ecosystems. His legacy endures, a testament to his extraordinary existence.

Tim had several encounters with humans throughout his lifetime, resulting in arrow and spear wounds. On three separate occasions, Dr. Poghon from the SWT/KWS Veterinary Unit provided medical care to Tim.

Two years ago, a collaborative effort rescued Tim from a swamp where he was stuck up to his chest.

Despite his brushes with peril, Tim reached the ripe age of 51, a remarkable achievement considering the widespread poaching of elephants in the late 70s and early 80s, as well as between 2009 and 2013, which claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of elephants across Africa.

It’s hard to fathom that Tim’s impressive tusks will no longer be admired, and his colossal footsteps will no longer grace the volcanic dust of Amboseli. Tim commanded respect and was a true Kenyan treasure.

Yet, we can find solace in the fact that Tim sired numerous offspring during his lifetime, and if we persist in safeguarding and nurturing wild spaces, there will be more “Tims” in the future.

Tim was more than just an elephant; he symbolized hope for his species.

To honor Tim’s legacy, we must continue our dedicated efforts to protect the other elephants he leaves behind and his companions who made heroic attempts to save him when he needed it most. Their loss must be profound, for Tim was genuinely irreplaceable.
