South Africa’s first dedicated elephant orphanage, Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation, and Development (HERD), recently celebrated a special moment: the warm-hearted acceptance of Khanyisa, an albino baby elephant, into the Jabulani Herd.
The establishment of HERD was led by Dr. Adine Roode, who recognized the urgent need to provide a haven for elephant calves orphaned by the tragic circumstances of poaching and human-elephant conflicts.

Through HERD, Roode and her team work tirelessly to integrate these young elephants into a nurturing adoptive family, offering them a chance at a life filled with joy and companionship.
Elephants, as reported by The Independent, are highly social creatures. They thrive in large herds, where females often assume collective responsibility for the calves.
The more female elephants are involved in a calf’s upbringing, the higher its chances of survival.
Moreover, elephants are known for forming enduring bonds with their kin and companions, with documented instances of them mourning their lost loved ones.
These complex social dynamics underscore the critical work carried out by HERD. As detailed on its website, the team leverages the Jabulani Herd’s unique structure– predominantly of orphaned elephants – to provide a lifeline to orphaned calves in Southern Africa.
The goal is to ensure their emotional well-being and long-term survival by embedding them in a nurturing family environment.
The emotional depth of this adoptive herd was vividly showcased when they welcomed the baby albino elephant, Khanyisa.
The moment, beautifully captured on video, unfolded as the matriarchs of the herd trotted towards Khanyisa, trumpeting their warm greetings.
The baby elephant was gently nestled among them, her new family members taking turns nuzzling her with their trunks in a show of affection mirrored holding hands.
With Khanyisa feeling secure and welcome, the remaining herd members hurried over, enveloping her in a protective huddle.
Their collective acceptance signified Khanyisa’s successful integration into the herd, where, despite her smaller size, she found her perfect fit.
The herd’s joyful reception of Khanyisa has resonated with many across the globe, with the video amassing over 1.1 million views.
One YouTuber encapsulated the sentiments of many viewers, saying, “This is such a beautiful, emotional moment to witness.
I wish we humans could understand their language. I would love to know what was said during this welcoming ceremony.”
