In a startling event, an elephant made its displeasure known by charging towards a  boat filled with tourists who ventured too close during a sightseeing tour on Botswana’s Chobe River.

Su-An Marais, a passenger on the boat, experienced a nerve-racking brush with the majestic beast. Initially, the animal seemed undisturbed, munching on reeds as the boat neared. However, things turned unexpectedly when the boat came within the elephant’s personal space.

Unhappy with the encroachment, the large mammal didn’t hesitate to defend its territory. With a swift movement, it used its tusks to butt the boat’s bow, causing a rapid retreat from the tourists.

“We backed off quickly, trying to put a safe distance between us and the visibly upset elephant,” shared Su-An. She had been filming the encounter, believing the elephant’s swimming speed would slow in the deep water.

“I wanted to capture the sounds of the peaceful grazing, not realizing we were too close for its liking. The sudden charge was shocking and all captured on camera.”

Reflecting on the thrilling experience, Su-An mentioned three critical takeaways for future wildlife encounters. “Firstly, always be alert, especially when observing animals in their natural habitat. The elephant’s eyes signaled its discomfort before it charged,” she advised.

“Secondly, never underestimate the capabilities of these magnificent creatures. Elephants can move swiftly in the water, even in a full flood like the Chobe, which tourists and animals can access easily.”

Finally, she emphasized the importance of respecting the privacy of wildlife. “Our boat was the closest among a few others near the elephant.

Looking back, the noise and close proximity must have aggravated it. Always give wildlife their needed space,” Su-An concluded.
