Kerrio found unexpected solace in the embrace of the other orphaned elephants, who quickly accepted her as a member of the family.

In the heart of Kenya’s Kerio Valley, a remarkable story of survival unfolds against a backdrop of conflict and illegal firearms.

This rugged terrain, home to around 800 majestic elephants, has sadly become a battleground for the Pokot and Marakwet tribes, their feud fueled by the illicit possession of firearms.

The tale begins with a thunderous exchange of gunfire that shatters the stillness of the Kerio Valley night. This unsettling event startled a nearby herd of elephants.

Local tribespeople stumbled upon an abandoned baby elephant lying helpless in the grass at dawn. Alerting the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), swift action was taken to rescue the calf.

Given the remote location and volatile circumstances, a helicopter was dispatched, piloted by Phil Matthews, who transported Julius, an experienced Keeper, to the site. Despite navigating through thunderstorms, they reached the scene around 3:00 p.m.

Julius administered necessary care to stabilize the calf, named Kerrio, in honor of her rescue location. Soon, they were airlifting Kerrio back to Nairobi before nightfall.

Throughout this rescue mission, Kerrio received crucial support at every stage. However, a concerning issue arose when she had to stand up in her stable.

Her hind legs were almost entirely unresponsive, causing them to wobble when she tried to bear weight.

This unexpected challenge puzzled her caretakers. It was unclear whether her injuries occurred before or during the conflicts in Chesogon.

Kerrio’s condition raised questions about whether she could not keep up with her herd as they fled gunshots or if she was trampled amid the chaos.

Evidence of sores on her hind feet and abnormal shoulder development suggested a longstanding struggle with her condition. Unfortunately, the actual cause may never be known.

Despite her semi-paralyzed state, Kerrio displayed remarkable progress after her arrival. She had a peaceful first night and enjoyed her meals.

Under the careful watch of her Keepers, she embarked on short excursions around the compound, gradually improving her mobility.

With time, her hindquarters grew more robust, and she regained the ability to stand up independently, albeit at a slower pace than her peers.

Veterinarians conducted X-rays and assessments of her condition, furthering hopes for her recovery.

Kerrio found unexpected solace in the embrace of the other orphaned elephants, who quickly accepted her as part of their family.

Heartwarming scenes unfolded as they surrounded her on her first day out, extending their trunks in a warm welcome.

Larro, a caring mini matriarch, checked on her regularly, and even the reserved Shukuru formed a bond with the new addition.

But Kinyei seemed to have a special connection with Kerrio, a friendship that blossomed from the start. Naleku, too, showed affection, signaling the formation of a strong bond between the two young elephants.

Kerrio’s story began with adversity, but with the support of her fellow orphans and dedicated Keepers, her future is filled with hope and promise.
