Olarro Conservancy rangers rescued a 15-year-old male elephant with an injured thigh

Olarro Conservancy rangers demonstrated their commitment to wildlife protection when encountering a young bull elephant in distress, taking immediate action to ensure its recovery.

While on routine patrol, the rangers noticed a 15-year-old bull with a wound on its right thigh. Recognizing the severity of the injury, they alerted the conservancy management and sought expert help.

With the elephant’s condition requiring urgent attention, especially within a herd of nearly 40 elephants, the conservancy quickly brought specialists to address the issue.

The team used chemical restraint, administering 10 milligrams of etorphine hydrochloride through a dart from a vehicle.

In about eight minutes, the bull was safely sedated, allowing for a close examination of the wound, which appeared to be a week old and showed signs of infection.

The wound, oriented downward and infected, needed immediate care. The team created an opening to promote drainage and healing, followed by a thorough cleaning with water. Hydrogen peroxide was used to remove dead tissue, and iodine was applied as a disinfectant.

Green clay, known for its healing properties, was used to pack the wound, helping to absorb toxins and support the healing process.

The bull also received antibiotic and anti-inflammatory injections—amoxicillin and flunixin meglumine—to aid in its recovery.

To complete the treatment, the team administered 24 milligrams of diprenorphine hydrochloride intravenously to reverse the sedation. Within four minutes, the bull was awake and rejoined its herd, showing no distress.

Olarro Conservancy’s quick and skilled response underscores their dedication to wildlife conservation and the health of the ecosystems they protect.
