Twin elephants account for less than one percent of births, making this spectacle a special event.

A pair of rare elephant twins has been born at Pongola Game Reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, marking a remarkable event in the wildlife community.

Twin births account for less than one percent of elephant births, making this sighting an extraordinary occurrence.

The twins, whose names have not yet been announced, were seen this week alongside their 31-year-old mother, Curve, and the supportive members of their herd.

The calves are believed to have been fathered by Ingani, a 44-year-old bull elephant who passed away just over a year ago.

This is the first recorded case of elephant twins in the region since 2006 when another set was born in Kruger National Park. While twin births are rare, their survival is even rarer due to the mother’s high demand for milk.

Curve’s herd has stepped in to assist with the care of the newborns, providing much-needed support during this critical period.

The game reserve staff has not yet determined the twins’ sex, as they are prioritizing Curve’s space and comfort while she nurses and cares for her calves.

Dr. Ian Whyte, an elephant expert and former member of the Kruger National Park team, highlighted the challenges twin elephants face: “Mortality of one of the twins often occurs because the mother cannot produce enough milk for both calves, and the less dominant one may struggle to access its share. Ensuring a stress-free environment is crucial for their survival.”

As the calves grow under the watchful care of their herd, wildlife enthusiasts are hopeful that this rare pair will thrive and contribute to the reserve’s rich biodiversity.
