Coronado city officials said the yellow-bellied snake with a spotted tail, more than 50cm long, was discovered by a passerby. Rescuers were alerted and put the snake in a bucket, but it dіed soon after.

In recent months, two other snakes have also washed up on the Southern California coast – one washed up on Huntington Beach in December, and one washed up in Ventura County in October. Both have dіed.

All three snakes belong to the ѕрeсіeѕ of snakes scientists named Pelamis platura, which was first seen during an El Niño event on San Clemente Island, in Southern California, in 1972.

Greg Pauly, who studies reptiles at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles County, said he believes the snakes appear to be due to this year’s stronger El Nino phenomenon, which makes the sea water here. unusually warm. Usually this snake lives in warm tropical waters off the coasts of Africa, Asia, Australia, Central America and Mexico.
